13 Years of Solo Traveler

On September 6, 2013, Solo Traveler began.

There was no grand plan for what it would eventually become. It started with a relatively simple idea: create a useful place for people interested in travelling independently.

Today marks 13 years since that beginning.

A lot has changed since 2013. The way we plan trips has changed. The tools we use have changed. Social media has changed. Travel publishing has changed. Even the way people discover information online is being reshaped.

Solo Traveler has changed too.

From a Travel Website to a Travel Resource

In its earliest form, Solo Traveler was primarily about travel content. Over time, the project began expanding beyond traditional articles and destination inspiration.

That evolution happened gradually.

The more I worked on Solo Traveler, the clearer it became that independent travellers often need something more practical than another list of places to visit. They need reliable information, useful tools and resources that help them make their own decisions.

That thinking has increasingly shaped the project.

Solo Traveler today includes travel guides, practical reference pages, research, tools, datasets and other resources designed around the realities of travelling independently.

Some are simple. Others are more ambitious. Together, they reflect a broader idea of what a travel website can be.

Solo Travel Is Not One Experience

One of the most important lessons from the past 13 years is that there is no single version of solo travel.

For one person, it might mean a weekend in a nearby city. For another, it could mean months travelling across several countries.

Some people travel alone because they value independence. Others do it because they do not want to wait for someone else before seeing the world. Some discover that they enjoy being alone. Others find parts of the experience difficult.

Both can be true.

Solo travel can be exciting, empowering and deeply rewarding. It can also involve loneliness, uncertainty, higher costs, safety considerations and moments when being responsible for every decision becomes exhausting.

I believe useful travel resources should make room for all of those realities.

The goal should not be to convince everyone that travelling alone is wonderful. It should be to help people understand the experience, prepare for it and decide what works for them.

Building for Independent Travellers

That philosophy has increasingly influenced what I choose to build.

Instead of thinking only about what article to publish next, I often think about what information or infrastructure might actually make independent travel easier:

• Could a reference page answer a question more quickly than a long article
• Could a calculator simplify a decision?
• Could structured data make useful travel information easier to reuse?
• Could research help us better understand the challenges solo travellers face?
• Could technology make travel information more accessible without making travellers more dependent on it?

Those questions have pushed Solo Traveler into areas I would not have anticipated when the site began in 2013.

They have also made the project much more interesting.

The Web Has Changed Too

Thirteen years is a long time on the internet.

Platforms have appeared and disappeared. Search has changed repeatedly. Social networks have risen, declined and reinvented themselves. Publishing tools have become easier to use while online ecosystems have become increasingly concentrated around a relatively small number of platforms.

Now artificial intelligence is changing how people discover and interact with information once again.

Through all of that, I continue to believe there is value in maintaining independent places on the web.

Websites can be more than containers for content. They can become long-term collections of knowledge, tools, experiments and ideas.

That is increasingly how I think about Solo Traveler.

It is not simply a stream of articles competing for attention. It is a growing body of resources that can be improved, connected and maintained over time.

What Hasn't Changed

The technology has changed. The website has changed. The scope has changed.

The underlying purpose has not.

Solo Traveler exists to help people travel independently with better information, greater confidence and a clearer understanding of the choices available to them.

Sometimes that means publishing a guide. Sometimes it means building a tool. Sometimes it means organizing information that already exists. Sometimes it means researching an overlooked part of the solo travel experience. And sometimes it simply means acknowledging that travelling alone can be complicated.

There is room for all of it.

Looking Ahead

I do not know exactly what Solo Traveler will look like another 13 years from now.

That is part of what makes building something over a long period interesting.

There will be new technologies, new ways of travelling and new questions worth exploring. Some parts of the project will undoubtedly change again.

But the direction is becoming clearer.

I want Solo Traveler to continue developing as an independent resource for people who travel on their own, combining useful publishing with practical tools, open information, research and thoughtful exploration of the solo travel experience.

Not everything needs to become bigger.

But it should become more useful.

Solo Traveler has been rebuilt, redesigned, reconsidered and expanded more times than I could have imagined when it began on September 6, 2013.

Through all of those changes, people have continued to visit, read, share, explore and use what I have created.
